It was only Spetmeber 27th when we went to Eastern Sierra, but the slopes were already ablazed with colors.

Right now, the High Sierra may be already covered with thick snow, but the lower elevation may still have some fall foliage. If you are planning to do some leaf peeping for the next year’s fall in California, you can use this website:  http://www.calphoto.com/fall.htm , for fall colors update.

Fall in California

Photographer @ Bishop Creek Canyon

California is not best known for its autumnal hues, as most of its forest is evergreen. Its deserts however are best known for spectacular spring wildflowers. If photographers flock to the North East for fall foliage, so do they in California for spring wildflowers. I actually love the colors of spring more than fall, maybe because I see more meaning in the transformation of an arid land to an almost “heaven on earth” when the otherwise dry barren land would put forth a phantasmagoric show of a million buds of wildflowers fluttering in the breeze.

But nevertheless, I also take the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful gifts of fall. All of the seasons are magical to me, as they all bring their wonderful surprises. One of the best places to enjoy fall in California is in the Eastern Sierra.

Aspen Trees Turning Gold

The golden hues of aspen trees become even more brilliant from the lighting of the sun and the warm Californian blue skies and calm waters.

Aspen trees are native to cold regions with cool summers, yet they require a lot of sunshine since they do not thrive very well in shade . Aspens grow in large clonal colonies derived from a single seedling. Since they are clones of one seedling, they all leaf out simultaneously during spring and also change color at the same time during fall. Ironically, fall in California is perhaps unknown to a lot of Californians just as its spring. :(
